Karunakaran using his new welding kit

Karunakaran is the eldest son in his family, with a younger sister and brother studying in 9th and 10th grades respectively. His father supports the family working as a farm laborer and his mother is a home maker. His father earns just 12,000 rupees ($260) a month. His family lives in the small village of Vilamal, which is about 18 kilometers from Manjakkudi, the town in which the Padma Industrial School is based.
