V. Raman is the son of a farm laborer who makes just 12,000 rupees (approximately $260) per year.  His father also has to support his brother and sister, who are in 9th and 10th grades respectively.  Raman joined the Padma Industrial School to help support his father and siblings.  Successful completion of the welding program at Padma will allow Raman to earn as much as $65 dollars a month.
